How old are you?

I’m 17, I’m in eleventh grade.

How long have you been cheering?

Since the middle of 9th grade, but my first real season of allstar cheerleading started in November 2011.

Where are you from?

Do you cheer for your school or allstar?

Allstar!

What tumbling do you have?

November 2011: I got my backhandspring

December 2011: I got my running handspring

January 2012: Got my round off tuck

March 2012: Got my round off handspring tuck

End of April 2012: Got my standing tuck and two days later I got my triple toe tuck

May 2012: Round off handspring layout (it’s still a bit piked)

Goals: To get my full by the end of August and a double before April 2013. Yes, I know I have a very long way to go, but I’m determined.

How to do a back handspring?

Sit, swing, jump. Make sure you sit back as if you’re sitting in a chair, swing, and then really push off of your feet. Remember to then push off your hands otherwise your arms will collapse and you won’t complete the skill. Keep your legs straight, it doesn’t look good if your leggies are bent! :p

How to do a roundoff back handspring?

Do a round off and make sure you’re rebounding backwards. If you aren’t it’ll be hard for you to throw a back handpspring out of it and you’ll under cut. Once you get that down it’ll be easy for you do the bhs after the round off. Just go into, don’t be scared because your body knows what it’s doing.

How to get more flexible?

Stretch everyday for at least a half hour. MAKE SURE YOU WARM UP FIRST. I cannot stress that enough. If you don’t warm up it’ll be hard for you to push your body further and you’ll increase your chances at pulling a muscle. Sit in your splits for at least a minute on each leg and then your straddle. Go into a bridge and hold it for as long as you can. Walk your feet into your hands and it’ll increase your back flexibility.

Help with my scorpion/needle?

Do lots of bridges and walk your feet in towards your hands. Also do shoulder stretches. Gabi Butler, from Top Gun, has a really helpful video on youtube. Search “Gabi Butler Stretch”.

Help with my heel stretch?

Get your split and lean down into it. Once you can do that, start doing oversplits. Put a book whatever leg is in front during your split.

How to be a better flyer?

Stay tight, squeeze everything, keep your knee locked out and trust your bases. They won’t let you hit the ground. Also, look up. If you look down, you’ll go down.

I want to be a flyer but I don’t know how to talk to my coach.. etc..

First off, make sure you’re flexible. One you have a decent scorpion, heel stretch, and bow and arrow, practice flying with some of your teammates and friends during breaks at practice or outside of practice. Once you’re surpassed the other flyers on your team (skill wise) show your coach!

Be yourself! Always be yourself. Smile, because no one likes a cheerleader with an attitude. Don’t be worried because you’ll do just fine. Wear something simple, soffes, regular cheer tee (make sure it’s not too short or too long), sports bra underneath, and a simple plain bow. Make sure you warm up and stretch before hand.
